Guardianship, Alternatives, and Supported Decision-Making
Our session will detail the process to obtain guardianship through the Surrogate Court, review the proposed reform issues to the current guardianship statute and discuss less restrictive alternatives to guardianship including health care proxy, power of attorney and assigning a representative payee for benefits.
In addition, we will review the principles of supported decision-making, an alternative to guardianship that focuses on developing a network of supporters to assist individuals with decision-making.
The session is intended for parents with children in middle school & high school but all are welcome.
About our presenters: Lawrence R. Faulkner, Esq. is General Counsel and Director of Corporate Compliance at Arc of Westchester (Westchester County Chapter, NYSARC, Inc.). He received a B.A. from Cornell University and a Master's degree and Juris Doctor from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Nancy Succoso is an advocate, educator and administrator for the Arc of Westchester Guardianship program. She received her BA from SUNY@ New Paltz and MA from Teachers College, Columbia University. Currently involved with Supported Decision-Making New York, Nancy is interested in promoting least restrictive alternatives to guardianship.
